Muslims prepare to observe Ramadan

Like other Valley Muslims, Venus Jassim is preparing for Ramadan and thinking about many things, especially food.What groceries does she still need to buy for her family’s “break-the-fast” meals?

Who will she invite to her dinners?

“It’s a busy time, like American Thanksgiving,” she says.

Ramadan is the Islamic holy period — 29 to 30 days — when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Their aim is to grow spiritually, depending more on God, and gain a better understanding of the poor and hungry.
