Please join us tonight, as well as Friday and Sunday, for the commemoration of Lailat ul-Qadr. Programs begin at 6:30 with Qur’anic recitation. In addition, we will spend these nights in contemplation, adoration, and servitude of the Holy Prophet (s) in remembering the life and sacrifices of his successor, Imam Ali (a).

Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (a) was the cousin, son-in-law, and closest companion of the Prophet Muhammad (S) throughout his entire life. The Prophet called Imam Ali his brother as is found in many ahadith. One such hadith found in the Sunni literature, Aisha is quoted in Al-Sawaaeq, No.74, that the Holy Prophet (s) said : “The best brother is my brother Ali… The remembrance of Ali is worship.”   Shi’a Muslims consider him the successor of the Holy Prophet and the first Imam. Sunni Muslims consider him as the fourth rightly guided khalifa and as stellar and righteous companion.

On the morning of the 19th of Ramadhan, in the year 661 C.E. (40 A.H.) Imam Ali was struck while praying salaatul fajr in Masjid al-Kufa by a Khariji named Ibn Muljam. He died two days later from the wound, however he spent those two days, in the throngs of pain, teaching his sons, his family, his followers, and us what it means to carry on his traditions.

He said to his sons:

“I advise you to fear Allah, and not to run after (the pleasure of) the world, even if it may run after you. Do not be sorry for anything from it which you have been denied. Say the truth and act for (Allah’s) reward. Be an enemy of the oppressor, and be a helper of the oppressed.

I advise you, my children, my household and all those who may receive my message, to fear Allah, to arrange your affairs well, to maintain good relations among yourselves, for I have heard your grandfather (s) saying: ‘Good relations are better than prayer and fasting in general.’

(Fear) Allah when handling matters of orphans. Do not let them starve, nor allow them to be lost as long as you are there…

(Fear) Allah in respect to the Holy Quran, (take care that) no one may excel you in following its tenets.

(Fear) Allah in respect to prayer, as it is the pillar of your religion…”
