Ziyarah

Ziyarah (Arabic: زيارة‎), or visit, is a form of pilgrimage to holy sites associated with the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s), his purified progeny (a), his companions and other venerated figures in Islam such as the ancient prophets (a), scholars and sages.  Common sites include mosques, houses and places associated with these figures and their lives such as wells, battlefields, mountains, and caves.

Among other smaller sites, the most visited sites are:

  • Makkah and Madinah in today's Saudi Arabia
  • Najaf, Karbala', Samarra' and Baghdad in Iraq
  • Mashhad and Qom in Iran
  • Damascus in Syria
