Valley Islamic leader talks about Ramadan

By Ron Orozco / The Fresno Bee

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan – the Muslims’ period of daily fasting from sunrise to sunset for 29 to 30 days – is just around the corner.

Ramadan begins each year the day after the first sighting of the crescent moon by the naked eye. Moonsighting.com is projecting the first sighting will be Sunday, which means Ramadan would start Monday.

Ramadan has evolved in the central San Joaquin Valley. Mosques hold community events throughout the month. The events feature meals to break the day’s fast together and speakers to address Ramadan and fasting.

The special gatherings will begin at the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno with the “Ramadan Night of Spirituality” at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the center, which is at 2111 E. Nees Ave. And the Muslim youth organization My Deen will host “Iftar for Non-Muslim Friends and Family” at 7 p.m. next Saturday at its headquarters, 1306 W. Herndon Ave.

The Bee recently caught up with Imam Seyed Ali Ghazvini of the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno to find out more about Ramadan, the Quran and Islamic beliefs. Read Entire article
