Islamic Cultural Center hosts Ramadan events

The Islamic center’s events began Friday with a break-the-fast gathering. The Rev. Natalie Chamberlain of United Christian Church in west-central Fresno and KFSN (Channel 30.1) also received 2013 Spirit of Abraham awards.

The events continue with a lecture/dinner fundraiser at 6 p.m. Friday at the center, 2111 E. Nees Ave.

John Esposito, professor of religion and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University and director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the university, is the speaker.  The event’s theme — “Being Muslim in America” — examines the success and challenges of promoting peace.

Esposito was booked as speaker of the 2010 Interfaith Scholar Weekend in Fresno, but he had scheduling conflicts and bowed out.

Tickets for the dinner cost $25 for general or $10 for students and children.
